# Set your preferences

> Choose your default recorder, control what Tella generates automatically after recording, and set the defaults every new video inherits for sharing and your library.

Preferences are your personal defaults. They decide which recorder opens, what Tella generates for you after a recording, how new videos behave when you share them, and how your library looks. They apply to your account only — they do not change your teammates' settings.

To open them, click your avatar, go to **Settings**, then **Preferences** under **Account**.

  Changes save as soon as you make them. There is no save button.

## General

**Appearance** sets your interface color scheme: **System**, **Light**, or **Dark**. See [dark mode](/docs/help/account/dark-mode) for details.

## Recording

**Recorder** chooses which recorder opens when you start a new video or clip. You can pick:

* **Always ask** — Tella asks each time whether to use the desktop app or the web app.

* **macOS app** or **Windows app** — always use the desktop app.

* **Web app** — always record in the browser.

  This setting only appears when you are on macOS or Windows, since it chooses between a desktop app and the web app. On other systems every recording uses the web app.

The three AI toggles decide what Tella writes for you after a recording finishes:

* **Auto-generate chapters** — automatically generate [chapters](/docs/help/editing/chapters) for new videos.

* **Auto-generate titles** — automatically generate a [title](/docs/help/video-metadata/edit-video-title) for new videos.

* **Auto-generate descriptions** — automatically generate a description for new videos.

Turning these off does not remove the feature — you can still generate a title, description, or chapters by hand on any video.

## Sharing

These set the defaults that **new** videos inherit. Changing one does not alter videos you have already recorded — to change an existing video, open its [viewer settings](/docs/help/sharing/viewer-settings) instead.

* **Show captions** — new videos have captions on by default.

* **Show view count** — new videos show the view count.

* **Show comments** — new videos have [comments](/docs/help/sharing/comments) enabled.

* **Show reactions** — new videos have [emoji reactions](/docs/help/sharing/reactions) enabled.

* **Show transcripts** — new videos show the transcript to viewers.

* **Allow document generation** — viewers can [generate documents](/docs/help/sharing/document-generation) from new videos.

* **Allow downloads** — viewers can download your videos.

* **Allow raw downloads** — viewers can download the [raw source files](/docs/help/export-videos/export-raw-recordings). This option appears once downloads are allowed.

* **Show copy link button** — new videos show the copy link button.

* **Playback speed** — the default speed the player starts at. Viewers can still [change it themselves](/docs/help/sharing/adjust-viewer-playback-speed).

## Library

**Always show playlists and tags** shows playlist and [tag](/docs/help/account/video-tags) badges on video thumbnails at all times, instead of only when you hover over them.

## Related settings

Some settings that look like preferences live elsewhere:
