# Change canvas size

> Use Auto sizing or choose from six canvas ratios to match your video's recording, platform, or format.

The canvas size controls the overall dimensions and aspect ratio of your video. You can let Tella match your recording automatically or choose a preset for a widescreen tutorial, square social clip, or vertical story.

## Auto canvas size

Choose **Auto** to size the canvas around your screen recording or uploaded video. Tella adjusts the canvas so the content has balanced padding as you change layouts.

In a video with multiple clips, Auto adjustments that stay in the same orientation preserve each clip's chosen layout, custom layer positions, and styling. If an adjustment changes between landscape, portrait, or square, Tella adapts the layouts to the new orientation.

## Available aspect ratios

Tella supports six canvas presets, grouped by orientation:

**Landscape**

* **16:9** (1920 × 1080) — standard widescreen, ideal for YouTube, presentations, and most web content
* **16:10** (1920 × 1200) — slightly taller widescreen, common for laptop displays
* **4:3** (1440 × 1080) — classic format, useful for slides and traditional presentations

**Square**

* **1:1** (1080 × 1080) — works well for Instagram feed posts and LinkedIn

**Portrait**

* **4:5** (1080 × 1350) — optimized for Instagram and Facebook feed posts
* **9:16** (1080 × 1920) — full vertical, ideal for TikTok, Reels, and Stories

## How to change the canvas size

1. Open your video in the editor.

2. Click the **canvas size** control (typically shown as the current ratio, such as "16:9").

3. Select **Auto** to match your recording, or choose an aspect ratio preset.

Your video will immediately update to reflect the new canvas dimensions. When you choose a preset, layouts and layer positions adjust automatically to fit the new aspect ratio.

## Tips

* Choose a preset canvas size **before** you start editing. Switching presets later will reposition your layouts, even when both presets have the same orientation, which may require adjustments.

* **Your canvas size is remembered.** When you pick a ratio in the editor, Tella saves it as your default — the next new video you create will start with that same ratio automatically.

* [Custom layouts](/docs/help/editing/custom-layouts) preserve their design intent across different canvas sizes — you don't need to recreate them for each ratio.

* If you're creating content for multiple platforms, you can duplicate your video and apply a different canvas size to each copy.
