# Chapters

## What are chapters?

Chapters are timecoded sections of your video with titles and descriptions. They help viewers navigate longer videos by jumping to specific sections. Tella can automatically generate chapters from your video's transcript using AI.

## How to generate chapters

1. Open your video in the Tella editor.

2. Click on the **Chapters** tab in the sidebar.

3. Click the **Generate** button (with the sparkle icon).

4. Tella will analyze your transcript and stream chapters as they're generated.

5. Once generation is complete, review the chapters in the editor.

6. Click **Done** to save, or **Cancel** to discard.

## Updating chapters after making trims

When you trim your video after generating chapters, Tella detects that your chapters may be out of sync. A banner appears at the top of the Chapters tab with an **Update** button.

Click **Update** to regenerate chapters based on your current video content. The new chapters will reflect your trimmed timeline.

## How to regenerate chapters

If you're not happy with the generated chapters, you can regenerate them at any time:

1. Open the **Chapters** tab.

2. Click the **Regenerate** button (sparkles icon), or open the three-dot menu and select **Regenerate**.

3. New chapters will replace the existing ones.

4. Review and click **Done** to save, or press **Enter** to confirm.

## Editing chapters manually

After generating chapters, you can fine-tune them:

* **Edit a title or description**: Click the **Edit** button (pencil icon) to enter edit mode, then click on any chapter to edit its text. Press **Enter** or click **Done** to save your changes.

* **Delete a chapter**: Remove individual chapters you don't need.

* **Delete all chapters**: Open the three-dot menu and select **Delete all chapters** to remove all chapters at once.

## Using chapters

Chapters unlock several useful actions:

* **Create a clip from a chapter**: Turn any chapter into a standalone video clip.

* **Keep only a chapter**: Remove everything except the selected chapter's content.

* **Copy as text**: Open the three-dot menu and select **Copy as text** to copy chapters with timestamps and dashes (e.g., `0:00 - Intro`).

* **Copy with descriptions**: Open the three-dot menu and select **Copy with descriptions** to copy chapters with timestamps, titles, and descriptions. Each chapter's description appears on a new line below the title, with a blank line between chapters.

* **Copy for YouTube**: Open the three-dot menu and select **Copy for YouTube** to copy chapters in YouTube's format without dashes (e.g., `0:00 Intro`), ready to paste into a YouTube description.

## Auto-generate chapters for new recordings

You can set Tella to automatically generate chapters for every new recording:

1. Go to **Settings** > **Preferences**.

2. Enable **Auto-generate chapters**. (this is enabled by default)

3. Chapters will be generated automatically after each recording is transcribed.

The Preferences page also includes **Auto-generate titles** and **Auto-generate descriptions** toggles. These control whether Tella automatically generates a title and description for each new recording using AI. Both are enabled by default.

## How viewers see chapters

When you add chapters to your video:

* Viewers see chapter markers on the video progress bar

* A chapter list may appear that viewers can click to jump to sections

* This makes it easy to navigate longer videos
