# Style subtitles

> Choose a subtitle preset, size, colors, position, highlighting, and how many words appear at once.

Tella automatically generates subtitles from your transcript. In the editor, you can enable or disable them, choose a visual style, and control how they appear in shared and exported videos.

## Open subtitle styles

1. Open your video in the Tella editor.
2. Click **Subs** in the toolbar.
3. Use the toggle beside **Subtitles** to enable them.
4. Open the **Style** tab.

Choose a preset to apply it immediately. Open the settings icon on the selected preset to customize it.

## Change size and position

In **Edit style**, choose **Small**, **Medium**, or **Large**.

Under **Position**, drag the horizontal guide in the preview to move subtitles vertically. For an exact position, enter a percentage from 0% at the top to 100% at the bottom.

## Customize colors

Each preset exposes the colors that apply to its design. Depending on the style, you can change options such as:

* Text and background colors.
* Primary, secondary, and highlight colors.
* Text and shadow colors.
* Text and outline colors.

Changes appear in the editor preview immediately.

## Control how words appear

The **Backdrop** style includes **Word-by-word highlighting**. When enabled, the full subtitle line remains visible while Tella emphasizes the current word. Turn it off to keep the full line at one consistent opacity.

**Single-word captions** is available for every subtitle style. It shows only the word currently being spoken instead of a multi-word line. See [Show one word at a time in captions](/docs/help/editing/show-one-word-at-a-time-in-captions) for details.

## Edit the subtitle text

Open the **Edit** tab to correct the words and timestamps shown to viewers. This changes the subtitle text without cutting the spoken words from the video. See [Edit with the transcript](/docs/help/editing/edit-the-transcript-of-a-tella-video#editing-the-transcript-text) for more.
