# Test your webcam and microphone

> Check your camera preview, resolution, frame rate, microphone level, and device selection before recording.

You can use Tella's free webcam test to check your camera and microphone before a call or recording. You don't need a Tella account, and nothing is recorded or uploaded.

<Card title="Open the free webcam test" icon="camera" href="https://www.tella.com/tools/webcam-test">
  Test your camera and microphone in your browser.
</Card>

## Run the test

1. Open the [webcam test](https://www.tella.com/tools/webcam-test).
2. Click **Test my camera**.
3. Choose **Allow** when your browser asks to use your camera and microphone.
4. Check the live preview, resolution, and frame rate.
5. Speak normally and confirm that the microphone level meter moves.
6. If needed, choose a different camera or microphone from the dropdowns.
7. Click **Stop camera** when you're finished.

You can turn **Mirror preview** off if you want to see the camera's unmirrored view.

## Understand the results

* **Resolution** shows the image size your browser is receiving from the camera.
* **Frame rate** shows how many frames the browser is displaying each second.
* **Microphone level** moves when the selected microphone detects sound.

<Tip>
  For most calls and recordings, 1280 × 720 at 30 fps is sufficient. Use 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps when you want a sharper published recording.
</Tip>

## If the test does not work

* Allow camera and microphone access from the permissions icon in your browser's address bar, then reload the page.
* Close Zoom, Teams, FaceTime, OBS, or any other app that may be using the camera.
* Check external camera cables, USB ports, privacy shutters, and hardware mute switches.
* Open the test in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari instead of an in-app browser.

<Note>
  The preview and microphone audio stay in your browser tab. The camera turns off when you click **Stop camera** or close the page.
