# Retranscribe a video

> Regenerate your video transcript to match the spoken language or improve accuracy. Helps when your video was transcribed in the wrong language, the subtitles are in another language, changing the transcript language did nothing, or you want to regenerate the transcript.

Tella automatically transcribes your videos when you record them, but sometimes you may want to regenerate the transcript, for example, if the wrong language was detected or if the original transcription wasn't accurate enough.

<Note>
  **Retranscribing does not translate your video.** The **Transcript language** setting tells Tella which language to transcribe the audio from. It must match what was actually spoken in the video. Selecting English for a Spanish-language recording will not produce English subtitles; Tella does not translate transcripts or subtitles into other languages.

## When is my transcript ready?

Tella generates the transcript after your video finishes uploading and processing. Your transcript is ready when the **Script** panel shows words and/or captions are available on the video.

* **Recorded clips** usually transcribe automatically within a minute or two of processing.
* **Uploaded files** can occasionally fail to transcribe, depending on the audio format. If the transcript doesn't appear after the video is fully uploaded and processed, try [retranscribing](#how-to-retranscribe) below.
* If you're waiting a long time, make sure the upload has finished. Check the video's page for a processing indicator and try refreshing.

  If captions appear on your video but the **Script** panel still shows no words after the video has fully processed, [contact support](/docs/help/support/support-portal). This is not expected and we can investigate. (A brief delay between subtitles appearing and the Script panel loading is normal.)

<Note>
  Tella transcribes each clip's audio individually. For uploaded video files, this includes the file's audio track. For clips recorded in Tella, audio playing inside a screen recording (for example, a browser tab or another app) is not transcribed separately. Transcription uses the microphone audio captured with the clip.

## How to retranscribe

1. Open your video in the Tella editor.
2. Click **Script** in the playbar under the video (or press **Shift + S**) to open the Script panel.
3. Open **More actions** in the Script panel and click **Transcript language**.
4. Select the language that matches what was spoken in the video.
5. Click **Update**.

The button shows **Updating…** while Tella processes the transcription. Once complete, your video's transcript and subtitles refresh automatically.

## When to retranscribe

* **Wrong language detected**: If the auto-detected language doesn't match what was spoken, select the correct language and update.

* **Mixed languages across clips**: If your video has multiple clips with different transcript languages, you'll see a "Mixed" status. Select the single language that was spoken to unify the transcript across all clips.

* **Improve accuracy**: If you've added terms to your [transcript dictionary](/docs/help/editing/create-your-custom-transcript-dictionary), retranscribing will apply those terms to the new transcription.

## Translating subtitles

Tella does not translate subtitles or transcripts into other languages. The transcript and subtitles will always be in the same language as the audio that was recorded.
