# Keyboard shortcuts

> A complete reference of all keyboard shortcuts available in the Tella video editor, player, and recorder.

Tella has keyboard shortcuts throughout the app to help you work faster. You can also press **Shift + ?** in the editor or video view page to open the shortcuts panel.

## General

| Shortcut                       | Action                        |

| **⌘ + Z**                      | Undo                          |
| **⌘ + Y** or **⌘ + Shift + Z** | Redo                          |

| **L**                          | Copy link to video            |
| **Shift + ?**                  | Open keyboard shortcuts panel |

## Editor navigation

These shortcuts let you quickly jump between tools in the editor sidebar.

| **1**    | Open setup sidebar        |
| **C**    | Open Cut sidebar          |
| **Y**    | Open layouts sidebar      |
| **E**    | Open Effect sidebar       |
| **V**    | Open Overlay sidebar      |

| **A**    | Open adjust sidebar       |
| **B**    | Open background sidebar   |
| **O**    | Open layer styles sidebar |
| **P**    | Go to video view page     |

<Note>
  These keys **switch between tools** in the left sidebar, they do not toggle a panel open and closed. Pressing **1** always opens the setup panel; pressing it again while setup is already open does nothing. The editor's left sidebar is always visible and there is no way to hide or collapse it. **Escape** closes the command menu when it is open and clears selections in timeline tools, but it does not close the sidebar. You do not need to close the sidebar to keep editing, just pick another tool or click your video on the timeline or canvas.

## Editor tools

| **⌘ + Option + F** | Mirror the camera                        |
| **⌘ + Option + C** | Crop the screen                          |
| **⌘ + Option + R** | Replace clip with new recording          |
| **Z**              | Add a zoom while the Effect tool is open |

## Layout editing

When you have a layer selected in the editor, you can move it with the arrow keys. In the Overlay timeline, plain vertical arrow keys reorder a selected visual overlay instead.

| **Arrow Up / Arrow Down** | Move a selected visual overlay up or down one timeline track |

## Cut, Layout, Effect, and Overlay timelines

These gestures work on the canvas timelines shown by the Cut, Layout, Effect, and Overlay tools.

| Gesture                | Action                                              |

| **Cmd/Ctrl + scroll**  | Zoom around the pointer                             |
| **Shift + scroll**     | Zoom while the pointer is over the timeline         |
| **Scroll**             | Pan the timeline                                    |
| **=** / **-**          | Zoom in / out                                       |
| **Shift + drag**       | Add another time range to the selection             |
| **Shift + click**      | Extend the current time range                       |
| **Option/Alt + drag**  | Drag without snapping                               |
| **Arrow keys**         | Nudge a selected edge or seam by one timeline pixel |
| **Shift + Arrow keys** | Nudge a selected edge or seam by 10 timeline pixels |
| **Escape**             | Clear explicit range and multi-card selections      |

## Layout, Effect, and Overlay cards

When the Layout, Effect, or Overlay tool is open, you can select and rearrange cards on the timeline with your mouse or trackpad.

| Gesture               | Action                                                                                  |
| --------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Cmd/Ctrl + drag**   | Select multiple cards                                                                   |
| **Cmd/Ctrl + click**  | Add or remove a card from the selection, or deselect a time range                       |
| **Option/Alt + drag** | Drag without snapping; on connected Layout or Zoom cards, pull them apart at their seam |
| **X**                 | Split selected cards at the playhead                                                    |

<Tip>
  Range and multi-card selection gestures are undoable, so **⌘ + Z** can step back through those selections as well as your edits. Clicking one card to navigate does not add an undo step.

## Video player

These shortcuts work on the video view page.

| **Shift + Arrow Left**  | Seek 10 seconds backward |
| **Arrow Right**         | Seek 5 seconds forward   |
| **Shift + Arrow Right** | Seek 10 seconds forward  |

## Video view page

| Shortcut | Action                           |

| **E**    | Edit video (editor/creator only) |
| **A**    | View analytics (creator only)    |
| **D**    | Toggle dark / light mode         |

## Recording

These shortcuts apply to the web recorder.

| Shortcut          | Action                                                                |
| ----------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Space**         | Stop recording                                                        |
| **Escape**        | Open the cancel confirmation while recording; press again to close it |
| **⌘ + Shift + R** | Record a new video                                                    |
| **⌘ + Shift + U** | Upload a video                                                        |

  On Windows, replace **⌘** with **Ctrl** and **Option** with **Alt**.

## Mac app recording shortcuts

The Mac app lets you set your own global shortcuts in **… → Settings → Keyboard shortcuts**:

* Start/stop recording
* Pause/resume recording
* Restarting recording
* Cancel recording
* Preview video

No shortcuts are assigned by default, and each combination must use two modifier keys (**⌘**, **⌥**, **⌃** or **⇧**) so your Tella shortcuts don't clash with other apps.

## Windows app recording shortcuts

The Windows app lets you set your own shortcuts for:

* Start and stop recording.
* Pause and resume recording.
* Cancel and restart recording.
* Open Speaker Notes.

Open the Windows app settings and choose **Keyboard shortcuts** to set each one. No shortcuts are assigned by default, and every combo needs at least two modifier keys (**Ctrl**, **Alt**, **Shift**, or **Win**). Tella tells you when a combo is already used by another Tella action or by another app, so you can pick a different one.
