An email gate asks viewers for their email address before the video plays; turn it on in Share → Gate → Collect emails. Use it to turn a shared video or playlist into a lead capture form: viewers enter their email once, then watch as normal, and you see every email in the share menu.

Turn on an email gate for a video

  1. Open your video in the editor and click Share in the top right.
  2. Click the Gate tab.
  3. Under Gate this video, choose Collect emails.
If the video’s link access is not already Anyone with the link, Tella asks Change link access? because the gate only shows to people who can open the link. Click Turn on gate to switch link access and enable the gate in one step.
The Gate tab is available to the video’s creator and editors. Workspace members and people you invited to the video never see the gate; only external viewers do.

Verify viewer emails

By default, viewers can enter any address and watch straight away. To make sure the emails you collect are real, turn on Verify viewer emails. Viewers then receive a six-digit code by email and must enter it (or open the link in the same email) before the video plays. Codes expire after 10 minutes, and viewers can request a new one or change their email from the gate.

What viewers see

Instead of the player, viewers see a card with the video’s thumbnail and title, an email field labelled Enter your email to watch this video, and a Watch video button (or Send verification code when verification is on). The card tells them their email is shared with the creator of the video. The gate appears on the video page and in embeds. Once a viewer unlocks a video, it stays unlocked in that browser, so they will not be asked again if they come back later.

See and download collected emails

Collected emails are listed in the Gate tab of the share menu, newest first, with how long ago each one was submitted.
  • Copy all copies the emails as a comma-separated list.
  • Download CSV downloads a spreadsheet with the email and the time it was collected.
Emails also appear in video analytics: a gated viewer shows up by email address in the latest views instead of as an anonymous viewer. Setting the gate back to Off stops asking new viewers for their email. Emails you already collected stay in the Gate tab.

Gate a playlist

You can also gate a whole playlist so that one email unlocks every video in it.
  1. Open the playlist and click Share playlist.
  2. Click the Gate tab.
  3. Under Gate this playlist, choose Collect emails, and optionally turn on Verify viewer emails.
The gate applies to the playlist page and every video inside it, including videos whose own link access is private. As with videos, the playlist’s link access changes to Anyone with the link when you turn the gate on. Only the playlist’s creator sees the Gate tab; managers can open Share playlist but cannot turn the gate on or off. See Organize and share videos with playlists for playlist roles.
A playlist gate only asks signed-out viewers for their email. Anyone signed in to Tella, whether or not they are in your workspace, can open a gated public playlist without going through the gate. Video gates are stricter: they only let workspace members and people you invited through.
Use a playlist gate for a course or a resource library: viewers enter their email once on the playlist page and can then watch every video in it without being asked again.
