To create a skill, ask the Tella Agent to save one, for example “Save what you just did as a skill”, or click Save as skill when the agent offers it after an edit. The agent writes the skill, shows it to you on a card, and saves it only when you click Save skill. A skill is a set of instructions the agent follows for an editing job you do often, like cleaning up a demo, styling captions or cutting a Short. Once it’s saved, you can run it on any video instead of writing the same prompt again.

Save an edit you just made as a skill

The best skills come from an edit you’ve already got right, with your corrections included.
  1. Edit a video with the agent until you’re happy with the result.
  2. Ask the agent: “Save what you just did as a skill.”
  3. The agent drafts the skill from the steps, tools, settings and corrections that worked. It leaves out anything specific to this video, like clip names and timestamps, so the skill works on other videos.
  4. Check the card that asks Save the skill … to your personal library? It shows the skill’s name, description, instructions and files. Click Read more to see all of the instructions.
  5. Click Save skill, or Cancel to leave it unsaved.
The skill works from your next message.

Save as skill: when the agent offers it

After you finish a multi-step edit and move on, the agent may show a card suggesting a skill, with a title and a one-line summary of what it would do. Click Save as skill to have the agent draft it, then approve it as above. Click Don’t suggest to stop these suggestions in that chat, or the X to close this one.

Create a skill from scratch

You don’t need to edit first. Describe the workflow and ask the agent to make it a skill, for example:
  • “Create a skill that removes filler words, cuts pauses longer than a second and adds subtitles in my brand color.”
  • “Make a skill for my weekly update videos: split layout for the demo, full camera for the intro, and chapters at the end.”
  • “Turn this brief into a skill.” (with the brief attached)
The agent asks for your approval before it saves, the same way.

Add a reference video or image to a skill

A skill can include files, like a video or image that shows the style you want. Attach the file to the chat, or point the agent at a clip, and ask it to add the file to the skill. The agent notes in the instructions what each file is for.
  • Each file can be up to 10 MB, so the agent trims or re-encodes a longer video first.
  • A skill can be up to 25 MB in total.

Personal or workspace skill?

The agent saves to your Personal library unless you ask it to share the skill with your workspace.
  • Personal: only you can use it.
  • Workspace: everyone in the workspace can use it, and their agents follow it too.
To change it later, open the skill library with the Skills button at the top of the agent sidebar and drag the skill between Personal and Workspace. If a personal skill and a workspace skill have the same name, yours takes priority. You need to be a workspace owner or member to create or change skills. Viewers and guests can run skills but not create them.

Run a skill you created

Type / in the message box and pick the skill, or open the skill library and click Use in chat. The agent also uses a skill on its own when your request matches the skill’s description.

Edit or rename a skill

Ask the agent, for example “Change my demo-cleanup skill to keep pauses under two seconds” or “Rename it to weekly-update”. It shows the change on a card: click Save changes to apply it from your next message. There’s no text editor in the skill library, so all changes go through the agent. Only skills written in Tella can be changed this way. A skill added from GitHub can be removed, but not edited.

Delete a skill

Open the skill library, click Remove skill (the trash icon) next to the skill, then Remove. You can also ask the agent to delete it; it asks you to confirm with Delete skill. A deleted skill can’t be restored.

Save your own version of a community skill

To start from a skill on tella.com/skills, click Copy under Use it in Tella on its page and paste the ID into the agent’s message box. Use it, ask for any changes, then ask the agent to save your version. It keeps the original’s files, such as its reference video, and saves your changed instructions as a new skill you can edit. To keep the community skill unchanged, click Save to my skills on its card in the chat. See Use a community skill in one chat.

Create a skill from another AI agent

An agent connected to the Tella MCP server, like Claude or ChatGPT, can save a skill to your Tella library too. Ask it to “save this workflow as a skill in Tella”. It goes to your Personal library unless you ask for Workspace, and the Tella Agent can use it from your next chat.

What makes a good skill

  • A clear description. The agent reads every skill’s name and description to decide when to use it, so say what it does and when, like “Clean up product demo recordings: cut fillers and pauses, add zooms on clicks.”
  • One job. A skill for demo cleanup and another for Shorts works better than one that does both.
  • Your rules, not this video’s. Ask for “cut pauses longer than a second”, not “cut the pause at 1:32”.
  • A lowercase, hyphenated name, up to 64 characters, like demo-cleanup. The agent picks one for you; ask for another if you prefer.
