Translate subtitles from the Subtitle language menu in the editor’s Subtitles panel: choose Add translation, and viewers can then choose a language when watching your shared video. Translated subtitles are available on paid plans, with up to 10 languages per video.
Add a subtitle translation
- Open your video in the editor and click Subs in the sidebar (or press
S). The subtitle style settings open on the left, and the Subtitles panel with your subtitle text opens on the right of the video.
- In the Subtitles panel on the right, open the Subtitle language menu at the top and choose Add translation.
- Search for a language and select it. Tella generates the translated track; its status appears in the menu while it processes.
- Select the language in the menu to review its subtitles. You can edit the translated text in the panel.
You can add up to 10 subtitle languages to a video. To refresh a track after changing the original subtitles, open that language’s options and choose Regenerate out of date (shown as Regenerate when the track is up to date). You can also Download SRT, Download WebVTT, or Delete language from the same menu.
Choose which language viewers see
In your video’s Viewer settings (in the More menu at the top of the editor), use Subtitle language to choose the track viewers start with. Viewer’s language selects a track based on their language; viewers can still switch tracks themselves. This setting appears once a translation is ready.
Export translated subtitles
Click Download in the editor. When your video has a finished translation and Subtitles isn’t set to None, the export dialog offers Subtitle language so you can choose the original or a translated track for subtitles in your download. To download a translated subtitle file directly, use Download SRT or Download WebVTT from that language’s options in the Subtitles panel.
Does Transcript language translate my video?
No. Transcript language tells Tella which language was spoken in the recording; it does not translate the audio or the editing transcript. Set it to the spoken language, then use Add translation for subtitles in another language. See Retranscribe a video if the spoken language was detected incorrectly. Last modified on September 28, 2026
