Change your video’s canvas size (its dimensions and aspect ratio) from the canvas size menu in the toolbar below the video, in the Layout panel header, or under Setup → Size. Choose Auto to match your recording, a standard ratio such as 16:9 or 9:16, or a Social media preset.
What does Auto canvas size do?
Choose Auto to size the canvas around your screen recording or uploaded video. Tella adjusts the canvas so the content has balanced padding as you change layouts. In Setup → Size, this option reads Auto · Match recording. It only appears when the clip has a recording to size the canvas around.
In a video with multiple clips, Auto adjustments that stay in the same orientation preserve each clip’s chosen layout, custom layer positions, and styling. If an adjustment changes between landscape, portrait, or square, Tella adapts the layouts to the new orientation.
Which aspect ratios are available?
Tella supports six standard canvas presets, grouped by orientation:
Landscape
- 16:9 (1920 × 1080): standard widescreen, ideal for YouTube, presentations, and most web content
- 16:10 (1920 × 1200): slightly taller widescreen, common for laptop displays
- 4:3 (1440 × 1080): classic format, useful for slides and traditional presentations
Square
- 1:1 (1080 × 1080): works well for Instagram feed posts and LinkedIn
Portrait
- 4:5 (1080 × 1350): optimized for Instagram and Facebook feed posts
- 9:16 (1080 × 1920): full vertical, ideal for TikTok, Reels, and Stories
Open Social media near the top of the canvas size menu, in the toolbar below the video or the Layout panel header, to choose a platform-specific preset. The Size dropdown in Setup lists only Auto and the standard ratios, not these presets. Presets are listed alphabetically:
- Facebook story: 9:16 (1080 × 1920)
- Instagram post: 4:5 (1080 × 1350)
- Instagram story: 9:16 (1080 × 1920)
- LinkedIn post: 1.91:1 (1200 × 628)
- Meta ad: 4:5 (1080 × 1350)
- Pinterest pin: 2:3 (1000 × 1500)
- TikTok: 9:16 (1080 × 1920)
- X post: 16:9 (1920 × 1080)
- YouTube: 16:9 (1920 × 1080)
- YouTube Shorts: 9:16 (1080 × 1920)
Choosing a social media preset sets the canvas to that platform’s dimensions. You can still adjust your layouts and layer positions afterward.
Change the canvas size
-
Open your video in the editor.
-
Click the canvas size control. It shows the current ratio, such as 16:9, and appears in the toolbar below the video and in the Layout panel header. You can also use the Size dropdown in Setup.
-
Select Auto to match your recording, choose a standard aspect ratio, or open Social media and select a platform preset (not available in Setup → Size).
Your video will immediately update to reflect the new canvas dimensions. When you choose a preset, layouts and layer positions adjust automatically to fit the new aspect ratio.
Tips
-
Choose a preset canvas size before you start editing. Switching presets later will reposition your layouts, even when both presets have the same orientation, which may require adjustments.
-
Your canvas size is remembered. When you pick a ratio in the editor, Tella saves it as your default. The next new video you create will start with that same ratio automatically.
-
Custom layouts preserve their design intent across different canvas sizes. You don’t need to recreate them for each ratio.
-
If you’re creating content for multiple platforms, you can duplicate your video and apply a different canvas size to each copy.
