How to Download a Loom Video in 2026 (Free Plan Included)

Loom downloads changed. What used to be a button anyone could find is now gated behind your plan and your role — and if you are on Loom's Starter Free plan, the download option is not there at all.

This guide covers who can actually download a Loom video in 2026, the steps for each case, and how to save any public Loom as an MP4 for free when Loom itself won't let you.

Short answer: if you're on a paid Loom plan as an admin or creator, download from the ⋯ menu above the player. If you're not, paste the share link into Tella's free Loom downloader — no account, no plan, no software.

Can you download a Loom video? Check your plan first

This is the part that trips most people up, so it's worth getting straight before you go hunting for a button that isn't there.

Two more rules cut across all of it: the Creator Lite role can't download on any plan, and neither can the Viewer role. On Enterprise, a workspace admin can also switch downloads off for the entire organization, which overrides everything above.

So "I can't find the Download button" is almost never a bug. It's the plan, the role, or a workspace setting.

If any of those apply to you, skip ahead to downloading a Loom for free — it works regardless of your Loom plan.

How to download your own Loom video

If your plan and role allow it, this takes about ten seconds:

1. Open the video from your Loom library.
2. Select the ⋯ (more) menu above the player.
3. Choose Download from the dropdown.

Loom always downloads in MP4, which plays on essentially everything and imports cleanly into any editor.

If you see a Polishing pixels message instead of a file, the video is still processing. Give it a few minutes and try again.

What you lose in the downloaded file

Worth knowing before you build a workflow on top of Loom downloads: the MP4 is not a full copy of what viewers see on the share page.

• Trims are kept — cuts you made are baked into the file.
• Call-to-action buttons, filler word and silence removal, chapters, and closed captions are not. Those live on Loom's player, not in the video.

If you need captions burned in or dead air actually removed from the file, you need a tool that renders those into the export. Tella does — Auto Cut strips silences from the video itself, and subtitles render into the download rather than sitting on top of a player.

Videos you can't download from Loom at all

Three cases where the button won't help no matter what your plan says:

• Videos using Variables (personalized videos) can't be downloaded.
• Meeting recordings can only be downloaded by the meeting organizer.
• Videos over 20GB — roughly three hours recorded in 4K. Loom asks you to contact support for anything bigger.

How to download any public Loom video for free

If Loom won't give you the file — free plan, wrong role, or you're just a viewer someone sent a link to — the fastest route is a downloader that works off the public share link.

1. Copy the Loom share link. Any public loom.com/share/... URL up to 30 minutes long works.
2. Paste it in at tella.com/loom-downloader and hit Download MP4.
3. Save the file. Conversion takes a few seconds to a couple of minutes depending on length.

A few limits worth knowing up front:

• Private videos won't work. The tool can only reach videos that are publicly shareable. If it's yours, set it to public in Loom, download, then set it back.
• Folder links aren't supported. A single video at a time. If you're moving a whole library, sign up and import folders in bulk instead.
• 30 minutes and 2GB per video. Anything longer or larger comes back as too big to download here — a two-hour all-hands recording won't go through. Use the bulk import for those.

How to download a Loom video someone shared with you

If the video isn't yours, Loom's own download path depends entirely on the creator — and on you.

If you want the creator to enable it

Ask them to switch downloads on for that video. On their side:

1. Open the video, go to the Edit tab in the side panel, then Settings.
2. Open the Audience tab and toggle Downloads on.
3. Refresh the page to see the option appear.

They can also make it the default for everything they record: open any video → Settings → Set defaults… → Audience tab → enable Downloads → Save.

The catch nobody mentions

Even with downloads enabled, you still need to be signed in to Loom and on a paid plan. Viewers who aren't signed in, or who are on Starter Free, won't see the download option no matter what the creator toggled.

That's exactly the gap the free downloader fills — it works off the public link, so your account status is irrelevant.

The last resort: screen record it

If the video is private, uses Variables, or is otherwise locked down, recording your screen while it plays is the only route left. Use Tella, OBS Studio, or Camtasia.

In OBS, that's roughly: create a scene → add a Window Capture source pointed at your browser (use Window Capture rather than Display Capture so you capture the audio too) → hit record → play the video → stop.

It's slower and the quality is only as good as your playback, so treat it as the fallback rather than the plan.

A note on rights: downloading someone else's video can have legal implications. If the creator disabled downloads deliberately, ask them before working around it, and don't redistribute content you don't have the rights to.

Common Loom download problems

The Download button is missing

Nine times out of ten this is the plan or role table above. Check both by selecting your profile image in the top right — Loom lists your workspace plan and your role in the modal that appears. If you're a Creator Lite or Viewer, an admin needs to change your role. If the workspace is on Starter Free, no role fixes it.

On Enterprise, also check with your admin that downloads haven't been disabled workspace-wide. If they confirm it's on and you still can't download, sign out, clear your browser cache, and sign back in.

The downloaded video looks stretched

This one confuses a lot of people, and the usual advice — "change your video player settings" — is wrong.

Loom's web player normalizes videos to a 16:9 frame, so everything looks proportional on the share page. The download keeps the original aspect ratio you recorded in. If you recorded at an unusual screen resolution, the raw file is what your screen actually looked like; the player was the thing adjusting it. Recording at a 16:9 resolution avoids the mismatch.

The download is slow

Large files over a shaky connection. Get on stable, high-speed internet before downloading a long recording, and let it finish in the background rather than starting over.

The video won't play after downloading

Try a different player — VLC handles basically anything. A file that plays in VLC but not elsewhere is a player problem, not a download problem.

Moving off Loom entirely?

If you're downloading videos because you're leaving, don't do it one file at a time.
