What is a weekly update?

A weekly update is a video shared by a founder, manager, or individual contributor to keep their team up to speed on what’s going on with their work or the company. Weekly updates are a great way to refocus teams and give higher-level information on priorities, issues, and opportunities relevant for the upcoming week.

How to make a weekly update video

1

Record

Log in or sign up for Tella. It takes only a couple of clicks. Once you’re inside, open the screen recorder and pick the screen and camera you want to share. Press “Start recording.” You can use just one recording for your weekly updates or make several.

2

Customise

Once you’ve covered everything in your weekly update, you can use Tella’s editor to customise your update. Trim clips, rearrange recordings and splice up the video, so your update only includes the essentials. You can also change the background of your video or apply different layouts within Tella’s editor.

3

Share or Download

When your weekly update video is complete, click “Finish.” You’ll go to Tella’s share page, where you can watch the video in full. If you need to go back and make any further edits, it’s easy. To share your update, copy a link to your email, Slack, or Teams. You can also download it as an MP4 file or generate an embed code.

FAQ

A weekly update is a video shared by a founder, manager, or individual contributor to keep their team up to speed on what’s going on with their work or the company. Weekly updates are a great way to refocus teams and give higher-level information on priorities, issues, and opportunities relevant for the upcoming week.

Weekly update videos should be no longer than 5-8 minutes. It’s within reason, of course. If you have a lot to cover, a longer video may be needed, but your teams likely want higher-level priorities or insights for the week. You don’t have to get too deep into the details during your weekly update. If your colleagues want more information on something, they can follow up with you afterward.

A weekly update’s purpose is to get a team or company on the same page and to share higher-level priorities for the week. It’s a great place to quickly share context and give team members the opportunity to follow up with you on anything that’s relevant for them. For global teams with lots of responsibilities, weekly updates can make sure everyone is clear on what they need to do for a week. Alternatively, weekly updates can look backwards to review the performance of a week.

In your weekly update video, make sure to include what’s relevant to other team members. Briefly review what you accomplished last week, highlighting any learnings or issues you ran into. Then outline your priorities for the week and what you plan to get done. If anything is relevant for a particular team or team member, make sure to call that out so they know to follow up with you. The goal of a weekly update is to give your team a clear idea of what you’ll be doing that week.
