To post a video on Reddit, click Create, pick a community, add a title, choose the video option, upload your file and click Post. In the Reddit app, tap the Create icon, choose Video, pick a clip from your phone and tap Post. Video uploads can be up to 15 minutes long (30 minutes with Reddit Premium), and the community has to allow video posts.

This guide covers each step on desktop and mobile, Reddit's video limits, what to do when the video option is missing, and how to share a YouTube video.

Reddit video requirements

Check these before you upload:

RequirementLimit
Video post lengthUp to 15 minutes (30 minutes with Reddit Premium)
File sizeKeep it under 1 GB
Video comment length2 seconds to 3 minutes
Where you can postCommunities that allow video posts. Not private or mature (18+) communities

Reddit's help center confirms the 15 and 30 minute post limits on its Reddit Premium page. For file size, Reddit gives a 1 GB limit (with under 300 MB recommended) for videos in comments, and it doesn't publish a separate limit for video posts, so 1 GB is the safe target for both.

Reddit doesn't list the file formats it accepts. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the safest choice because almost every device and browser can play it. MOV files from an iPhone or Mac usually upload too.

How to post a video on Reddit from a computer

  1. Go to reddit.com and log in.
  2. Click Create at the top right. If you're already in a community, use its Create a post button instead and the community is selected for you.
  3. If you started from the home page, choose a community from the dropdown.
  4. Add a title. You can't edit a post's title after it's published, so check it now.
  5. Choose the option for images and video, then upload your video file or drag it in.
  6. Add flair, or mark the post NSFW or as a spoiler, if the community needs it.
  7. Click Post.

If you don't see a video option, the community doesn't allow video posts. See why you can't post a video on Reddit below.

How to post a video on Reddit from the app

  1. Open the Reddit app on iPhone or Android.
  2. Tap the Create icon. It's at the bottom of the screen on Android, at the top right on iPhone, or inside a community.
  3. Choose a community if one isn't selected already.
  4. Add a title.
  5. Choose Video, then pick a clip from your camera roll.
  6. Add any flair or tags the community requires.
  7. Tap Post.

The app gives you the same post options as the website, so if Video is missing on your phone, it will be missing on desktop too.

How to post a video in a Reddit comment

Many public communities also let you reply with a video:

  1. Open the post and start a comment.
  2. Click or tap the video icon in the comment box.
  3. Select a video from your device or record one. Videos in comments can be 2 seconds to 3 minutes long.
  4. Finish your comment and post it.

If there's no video icon, the community has video comments turned off, or it's an NSFW community, where Reddit doesn't allow them.

Why can't I post a video on Reddit?

If the upload fails or the video option doesn't appear, the cause is usually one of these:

  • The community doesn't allow video posts. Moderators can turn text, links, images and videos on or off separately, so a community that accepts images might still block video. Check the community's rules (in the sidebar on reddit.com, or under About in the app).
  • The community is private or for mature (18+) content. Reddit doesn't allow videos in private or mature communities.
  • The video is too long. Trim it to 15 minutes or less, or 3 minutes for a comment.
  • The file is too large. Compress it to under 1 GB, or under 300 MB for the most reliable upload.
  • The format won't play. Convert the video to MP4 with H.264 and AAC and upload it again.
  • Your connection dropped. Large uploads need a stable connection. Try again on Wi-Fi.

If the community doesn't take uploads at all, you can usually still post the video as a link (see the next section) or post it to your own profile.

How to share a YouTube video on Reddit

You don't need to download a YouTube video to share it on Reddit. Post it as a link:

  1. Copy the video's URL from YouTube's address bar or its Share button.
  2. On Reddit, click Create and choose the community.
  3. Add a title, choose the Link option and paste the URL.
  4. Click Post.

You can't embed a YouTube player with an embed code. Reddit's Markdown supports formatting and HTML entities but not HTML tags, so an iframe embed code won't render. Share the link instead.

Only upload someone else's video if you have the rights to it. Linking to the original is the safer choice, and it credits the creator.

Why your Reddit video has no sound

Reddit videos often start muted. Tap or click the speaker icon on the video to turn the sound on.

  • iPhone: to stop the app muting every video, tap your avatar, open Settings and turn off Mute videos by default under Advanced.
  • Android: the app remembers the last mute setting you used in your feed. Unmute any video in your feed and the next ones will play with sound.

If a video you uploaded is still silent, check that the original file has an audio track. Some screen recordings and exports save video without sound.

How to make your Reddit video work well

  • Get to the point in the first few seconds. Videos autoplay in the feed, so the opening has to make people stop scrolling.
  • Add captions. Plenty of people browse with the sound off. Reddit's own automatic captions are only available for some videos on mobile, so burning in captions makes sure everyone can follow along.
  • Write a clear title. The title is what people read before they decide to watch, and you can't change it later.
  • Post at the right time. See the best time to post on Reddit for when communities are most active.

If you're sharing a walkthrough, demo or tutorial, you can record it with Tella, trim it in the editor and download it as an MP4 with the captions burned in, ready to upload.
