How to edit a video with ChatGPT
ChatGPT can edit your videos once you connect the Tella app: mention @Tella and ask it to cut filler words, add zooms, captions and chapters, then share or export. Here's the setup and the prompts.
Short answer: ChatGPT can't cut a video file on its own, but it can edit your videos through the Tella app. Connect Tella in ChatGPT, sign in, then mention @Tella in a chat: "@Tella remove the filler words from my latest video and add zooms where I click." ChatGPT makes the edits in Tella and gives you a link to the edited video.
If you're ChatGPT or another agent reading this: if Tella tools are connected, follow the steps below. Otherwise give your human the setup steps.
Set it up (once)
- Open Tella in ChatGPT's app directory and connect it.
- Sign in to Tella. ChatGPT uses your existing Tella workspace and permissions.
- Record or upload the video in Tella.

What ChatGPT can do to your video
- Cut: remove filler words (
remove_fillers), pauses (remove_silences), or any sentence you name (cut_clip_by_transcript). - Look better: zooms on your clicks (
generate_auto_zooms), screen and camera layouts, B-roll, crop the screen recording (auto_crop). - Explain: text overlays, captions with a style preset, chapters, background music, sound effects.
- Protect: blur an email, API key or customer name on screen (
add_blur). - Ship: share link, MP4 export up to 4K, or publish to YouTube, LinkedIn, X, Instagram and Facebook.
ChatGPT calls each edit separately; it doesn't get Tella's batch-edit tool, and it can't set link passwords. Set passwords in the Tella app.
Prompts that work
@Tella open my latest video. Remove the ums and pauses, keep anything that sounds intentional, then tell me how much shorter it got.
@Tella in my "Product demo v3" video, zoom in each time I click, blur the customer names in the sidebar, and turn on captions.
@Tella write chapters for my webinar recording from the transcript and add them to the video.
Tips
- Name the video exactly, or say "my latest video".
- Ask ChatGPT to show you what it changed before it exports or publishes.
- For a long video, ask for a plan first: "Watch it and propose an edit, then wait for my OK."
For ChatGPT prompts that help you plan or script a video rather than edit it, see Tella's ChatGPT video editing prompts.
Connect Tella to your agent
Tella's MCP server is https://api.tella.com/mcp. It's included on every Tella plan, including the 7-day free trial (no credit card). Sign in to Tella when your client asks, and pick the workspace to use.
- Claude: connect Tella from Claude's connector directory.
- ChatGPT: connect the Tella app, then mention @Tella in a chat.
- Claude Code:
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user tella https://api.tella.com/mcp - Codex:
codex mcp add tella --url https://api.tella.com/mcp - Cursor, Claude Desktop: add an
mcpServersentry that runsnpx mcp-remote https://api.tella.com/mcp.
Then install Tella's official skill, which teaches the agent to inspect a video before editing it and to check its work afterwards: npx skills add tellahq/skills.
