How do I remove the room behind me in a recorded video without a green screen?
In Tella, ask the Tella Agent to cut you out, or pick the Cut out layout under Layout. Tella removes the background from your camera or uploaded footage. Only you appear, over your screen recording or the background you choose in Style.
How to do it
- Open a video with camera footage of a person in the Tella editor.
- Ask the Tella Agent to cut you out, or select Cut out under Layout.
- Pick your side of the screen recording, then move or resize yourself.
- Pick a color, gradient, image or animated background under Background in Style.
Good to know
- Needs a paid plan or the 7-day trial. Messages use your workspace's credits.
- Cut out works best when you stand clearly apart from your background. Hair and fast movement can leave soft edges.
- Download waits until Preparing cut-out finishes, but you can keep editing in the meantime.
- Choosing Cut out turns Pop-out off. Cut out isn't available for screen-only recordings.

Yes. In Tella, the Cut out preset fills the canvas with uploaded footage of a person. To keep another layout, open Customize layout and turn on Cut-out in the Screen section.
Yes. Claude or ChatGPT connected to Tella's MCP server can apply the Cut out layout to a clip. It can also set a layout's camera style to Cut-out and keep that layout's camera position.
